Peanut Butter-Banana Smoothie
Beverage, Breakfast
Source: America's Test Kitchen
Serving size: 2
Ingredients
- INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup ice
- 2 ripe bananas, peeled and halved crosswise
- 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
- 1 cup plain dairy or plant-based yogurt
- ½ cup water, plus extra as needed
Directions
- In order listed, add all ingredients to blender and process on low speed until mixture is combined but still coarse in texture, about 10 seconds, scraping down sides of blender jar as needed. Gradually increase speed to high and process until completely smooth, about 1 minute. Adjust consistency with extra water as needed. Serve.
Notes
- The pairing of sweet bananas and salty, creamy peanut butter is an old standby because the flavors contrast so perfectly that they meld into a completely new one, not quite savory and not quite sweet. But because that strong flavor can be easy to overdo, we mellowed the intensity with neutral, creamy yogurt. Bananas, peanut butter, and yogurt all have thick consistencies, so adding a small amount of water was necessary to help the blender blade catch, turn, and process the ingredients properly. We also tested with powdered peanut butter and water and found that it was a perfect swap because the powder had concentrated flavor and the water served as a liquefier. A cooling cup of ice thrown into the blender worked to add aeration and break up the creamy, dense texture. This combination is so good that you could call it the King of Smoothies.
