Creamed Chipped Beef (SOS)

Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all‑purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 jar (2½–3 oz) dried chipped beef, sliced
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 4–6 slices white bread, toasted
- (Optional, but period‑appropriate)
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
Directions
- Rinse and slice chipped beef if needed.
- Melt butter; stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes.
- Gradually add milk, stirring until smooth and thick.
- Add beef; simmer 5–10 minutes.
- Season with black pepper.
- Serve over toast.
