Lithuanian Duonos Sriuba - Rye Bread Soup

Ingredients
- 4 cups stale bread, cut into small pieces rye bread or dark bread works well
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 carrot, chopped
- 1 celery stalk, chopped
- 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
- 1 tsp marjoram, dried
- 1/2 cup heavy cream or sour cream optional
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill optional
- Optional ingredients:
- Bacon or sausage: You can add diced bacon or sausage to the pot with the onion for added flavor.
- Mushrooms: Sliced mushrooms can be added to the pot with the onion and garlic for extra flavor and nutrition.
Directions
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic, chopped carrot, and celery stalk to the pot. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the stale bread pieces, vegetable or chicken broth, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir well to combine.
