Mulled Cider

Beverage • Fruit
Source: Recipe Keeper
Serving size: 1 gallon
Prep time: 15 mins
Cook time: 4 hours

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon apple cider (not apple juice)
  • One large orange, sliced (peel still on). For less flavor, use just the peel.
  • Apples (optional)
  • Lemon (optional)
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon (0.22 oz) whole cloves
  • 1.5 teaspoon (0.13 oz) whole allspice berries
  • 4 star anise pods
  • 6 cardamom pods
  • 4 whole nutmeg
  • Ginger (optional)

Directions

  • 1. (Optional) Toast the spices in a skillet for a few minutes until browned and fragrant. This intensifies the spice flavors but you can get by without it if you don’t want to do extra work.
  • 2. Put all ingredients in the crockpot and set the crockpot on low. Cook for at least 4 hours, but you get more of the spice flavors if you can leave it running longer (e.g., overnight).
  • 3. Remove the fruit and whole spices with something (e.g., slotted spoon, strainer, cheesecloth)

Notes

  • - I wrote this one myself by reading a bunch of different recipes to get a sense of ingredient ratios. I’ve made it several times, and I usually don’t add the optional ingredients or steps.
