Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons anise extract OR 3 drops anise oil in 1 T., hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 1/3 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove
  • 1 1/2 cups conf. sugar

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350.
  • Mix egg, dark brown sugar, shortening, molasses, and anise.
  • In a separate bowl, sift soda, flour, salt, and spices and blend into dough. If too sticky, add some extra flour, if too dry, add some water.
  • Roll into 1 teaspoon balls and place 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet.
  • Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. They might bake at 325 for 8 minutes instead. Watch for when they crack--but don't overcook or they will get hard. They should still be slighlty soft in the center.
  • Roll in conf. sugar while still warm.
