Ingredients

  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1-2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/3 cups milk or buttermilk
  • Optional Topping:
  • 2 Tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • If you don't have self-rising flour, you may use:
  • 2 cups All Purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 400F. Lightly grease a baking pan, or line with parchment paper and set aside.
  • 2. Measure flour into a bowl. Add shortening and combine with a fork or pastry blender until it is the size of a pea or smaller.
  • 3. Add cheese, and milk in a large mixing bowl just until combined.
  • 4. Using a 1/4 cup or cookie scoop, pour biscuits onto the greased baking tray, forming a dome-like shape. Ensure you space them evenly as they rise and spread.
  • 4. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until lightly golden on top and cooked through the center, but not overcooked- It should be fluffy.
  • 5. Remove from oven. If you choose, mix butter and, garlic powder and spoon over the top.
  • 6. Enjoy immediately or cool completely before storing in an air-tight container.
