How To Prepare Dried Mushrooms for Cooking

Ingredients

  • Mighty Cap Dried mushrooms, any amount and any variety

Directions

  • 1. Measure the mushrooms: 1-2 oz of dried product will be good for 1-2 servings. Make note that dried mushrooms have more flavor than fresh mushrooms.
  • 2. Cover the mushrooms with hot water: Cover generously with water and gently push on the mushrooms to submerge them into the water. You can place something over the top to submerge the mushrooms in water. You can also use broth as your rehydration liquid.
  • 3. Soak your mushrooms: Soaking time will vary depending on the size and thickness of the mushrooms. Typically it will take 20 to 30 minutes. Thicker and whole cap mushrooms may take a little longer — Mushrooms are ready to use when they have softened all the way through.
  • 4. Remove the mushrooms from the liquid: When the mushrooms are soft, lift them from the water using your fingers or a spoon, squeezing them lightly to remove as much water as possible. Save the liquid by refrigerating it or even freezing it. This will make a great back end flavor for all sorts of cooking like risotto, sauces and soups.
  • 5. Your mushrooms are now ready to use! Chop and sauté to use in any of your meals.
  • 6. Bonus use: Take your dried mushrooms( before hydrating them) and grind them up in a blender or coffee grinder until it has the same consistency of flour. Now you can use this as a spice rub on anything like meat, chicken, fish or vegetables. Finally if you’re feeling more creative, substitute this powder in partially for recipes that call for flour! That way when you make your homemade bread, pasta noodles or pizza dough you will create some very delicious dishes. Enjoy !
  • 7. Shelf life: dried mushrooms will last a long time in the pantry, typically 2-3 years. They are very shelf stable in an airtight container.
