Salisbury Steak Meatballs with Mushroom Gravy

  • For the Meatballs
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Mushroom Gravy
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions

  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Combine thoroughly. Shape the mixture into 1-inch diameter meatballs.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and brown them on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Once browned, remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they become tender and browned, roughly 5 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually pour in the beef broth and water while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer, allowing it to thicken into a rich gravy.
  • Return the browned meatballs to the skillet with the mushroom gravy. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked through and have absorbed the flavors of the gravy.
  • Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Serve the Salisbury steak meatballs with the mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or pasta for a comforting and hearty meal.
